Romantic Bonnet Complete

I ended up taking a Romantic Era bonnet class online and spent the weekend working on my project. I highly recommend the class as I learned a ton about millinery techniques. I’m more motivated to make some other outfits more complete by adding head wear since that seems to be the final touch most of them need.

One of the patterns recommended was Lynn McMaster’s 1830’s Romantic Period Bonnet. I ordered that and a few more to get the 3+ pattern discount she offers.

Spent the afternoon watching Wonder Woman then Hot Fuzz working on building the buckram frame. Applied millinery wire to the crown and brim then covered those areas with bias tape to smooth the edges .

Buckram frame is finished

Used lightweight flannel and covered the buckram to create a smooth surface for the final silk to go over

Figuring out how to lay the pleats on the outside brim. Used so many pins until I got it ok. I don’t think it will ever be perfect because of the grain-line of the fabric.

Finished the silk fabric outer layer

  1. It looks great, thanks for sharing! I’m surprised you didn’t go with purple silk though. 😉
